Meet The Creator

My journey and the inspiration for The Sole Forest

In the fall of 2022 we relocated from Canada overseas to the desert. He had an amazing job opportunity, and after 30 years of tough physical work as well as running my own business back home, I welcomed the opportunity to do some self reflection and self improvement.

But, I can only workout for so many hours and walk the dog so many times a day. I'm a mother to two grown daughters and grandmother to two little ones, plus an aunt to many nieces and nephews. We talked about what I could do that would still afford us the freedom to travel home and spend as much time as possible with my children and grandchildren.

I’m a shoe addict. Which is surprising as I have the world’s ugliest feet…maybe it’s an attempt to hide the bunions…challenging but possible…sometimes. And so is one of my very best friends. When my youngest daughter was small, this friend would bring fun and funky shoes to a very excited two year old. We told her it was the Shoe Fairy.

We got away with it for a few years, until she figured out that shoes “magically” appeared when her Auntie R came to visit.

But what a fun idea! To be able to bring fun and funky shoes to babies. But the Shoe Fairy? How do I tie that in?

I’ve always been a big believer in reading to little ones. It’s bonding, it’s relaxing, it can be exciting and certainly can be used as subtle teachable moments. And there's no screen involved...something I know most parents struggle with (just ask my daughter!)

So why not combine the two?

And then I spent a while staring at a blank word document. But how, but who? I needed inspiration.

Last summer, I went home to visit friends and family. My grandkids are fun, full of life and laughter and two of the sweetest spirits I’ve ever been blessed to know. My youngest niece is a force of nature with an infectious smile and a determination not to be trifled with.

So yes, Adamar, Calen and Honey Badger are all inspired by three very special young people in my life. For that matter, most everyone in the stories is inspired by family and dear friends. Those who haven't appeared yet are patiently waiting to see who or what they'll be. They also know who they are, they know I love them, that I’m honored and grateful to have them in my life.

I hope you enjoy the stories. I hope you enjoy the cuddle time. Treasure every moment. It goes so fast.

With love,

Jann
